Are your gums receding, causing sensitivity or an unaesthetic “long tooth” appearance? Swenson Periodontics offers expert gum graft procedures in Las Vegas to protect your teeth and restore a healthy, beautiful gumline.

Gum recession is a common dental problem where the gum tissue surrounding the teeth pulls back, exposing more of the tooth’s root. This exposure can lead to increased tooth sensitivity, an elevated risk of root decay, bone loss, and an undesirable aesthetic impact on your smile. At Swenson Periodontics, Dr. Dane Swenson specializes in gum grafting (also known as soft tissue grafting or root coverage grafting) to effectively treat recession and restore your gum health.

What is Gum Grafting?

Gum grafting is a surgical procedure designed to replace lost gum tissue or to thicken existing gum tissue. During the procedure, a small amount of tissue is meticulously taken from another area of your mouth (typically the roof of your mouth or a nearby healthy gum area) or, in some cases, a carefully processed donor source. This tissue is then carefully placed and secured over the exposed tooth roots where recession has occurred. The goal is to cover the exposed root surfaces, reduce sensitivity, prevent further recession, and improve the overall appearance of your gumline.

Types of Gum Grafts We Offer:

Dr. Swenson will recommend the most appropriate type of graft based on your specific needs:

  • Connective Tissue Graft: This is the most common and effective method for root coverage. A small piece of tissue from beneath the surface of the roof of your mouth (palate) is used.
  • Free Gingival Graft: Similar to a connective tissue graft, but a small piece of tissue is taken directly from the surface of the palate. This is often used to thicken existing thin gum tissue.
  • Pedicle Graft: This involves grafting tissue from the gum immediately adjacent to the tooth needing repair. It is folded over to cover the exposed root, maintaining its original blood supply. This technique is only possible if there is sufficient gum tissue next to the receding area.
  • Allograft (Donor Tissue): In some cases, processed human donor tissue (acellular dermal matrix) can be used, eliminating the need to take tissue from your palate. This is a convenient option for many patients.

Why is a Gum Graft Needed?

  • Reduce Tooth Sensitivity: Exposed tooth roots lack the protective enamel layer of the crown, making them highly sensitive to hot, cold, and sweets. Gum grafting covers these roots, significantly reducing discomfort.
  • Prevent Further Gum Recession: By adding new gum tissue, we create a stronger barrier against future recession and protect the underlying bone.
  • Protect Against Root Decay: Exposed roots are more susceptible to decay and abrasion. Gum grafts provide a vital protective layer.
  • Improve Esthetics: A receding gumline can make teeth appear unnaturally long or create an uneven smile. Gum grafting restores a more natural and symmetrical gumline, enhancing your smile’s appeal.
  • Support Overall Oral Health: Healthy gum tissue is fundamental to the stability and longevity of your teeth.
