Request an AppointmentWhat is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry, sometimes called “sleep dentistry,” uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. While often referred to as “sleep dentistry,” most forms of sedation allow you to remain conscious and responsive, though you may feel very drowsy or have little memory of the procedure afterward.
Types of Sedation Dentistry Offered at Swenson Periodontics:
Dr. Swenson will discuss your anxiety levels, medical history, and the length of your procedure to determine the most appropriate sedation option for you:
- Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas):
- How it Works: This is the lightest form of sedation. A colorless, odorless gas mixed with oxygen is inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose.
- Effects: You’ll feel relaxed, sometimes euphoric, and may experience a tingling sensation. You remain fully conscious and able to communicate.
- Recovery: The effects wear off very quickly once the mask is removed, allowing you to drive yourself home and resume normal activities immediately. Ideal for mild anxiety or shorter procedures.
- Oral Sedation:
- How it Works: A pill (typically an anti-anxiety medication) is prescribed to be taken approximately an hour before your appointment.
- Effects: Induces a state of deep relaxation and drowsiness. You will be conscious but may feel very groggy and often have little to no memory of the procedure.
- Recovery: The effects last longer, so you will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment. Suitable for moderate anxiety or longer procedures.
- IV Sedation (Intravenous Sedation):
- How it Works: The sedative medication is administered directly into your bloodstream through an intravenous line. This allows for precise control over the level of sedation.
- Effects: Provides a deeper level of relaxation, often making you feel like you’re sleeping through the procedure. You remain technically conscious and able to respond to commands, but you’ll be profoundly relaxed.
- Recovery: Effects are longer-lasting, requiring a responsible adult to accompany you home. Your vital signs are continuously monitored by our trained team throughout the procedure. Ideal for severe anxiety, complex procedures, or lengthy appointments.
Benefits of Sedation Dentistry:
- Reduces Anxiety & Fear: Helps overcome dental phobia, allowing you to receive necessary treatment without stress.
- Increases Comfort: Makes even complex or lengthy procedures feel much more manageable and comfortable.
- Minimizes Gag Reflex: Can be particularly helpful for patients with a strong gag reflex that interferes with treatment.
- Allows for More Work in Fewer Visits: For extensive treatment plans, sedation can allow Dr. Swenson to complete more work in a single appointment, reducing the number of visits needed.
- Pain Management: Works synergistically with local anesthesia to ensure a completely pain-free experience.
